Submit to the HBFF 2013 Storyteller Competition

The Hollywood Black Film Festival (HBFF) continues its groundbreaking Storyteller Competition, to help further diversity in the film industry by encouraging and developing black screenwriters.  Our goal is to discover and recognize the brightest new storytelling talent and original voices in film. We identify emerging talent and place top new screenwriters firmly on the industry’s radar directly in the heart of the film industry.

While talent is key, connections are crucial in the entertainment business. The HBFF Storyteller Competition offers black screenwriters the opportunity to jump-start their careers as screenwriters by exposing their work to industry professionals who can open doors for them.

What we are looking for:

■     A fresh and unique voice.

■     Well developed and multi-dimensional characters.

■     Plot is clear and offers an appropriate amount of twists, set-ups and payoffs.

■     Scripts are properly formatted.

■     Material is commercially viable and producible.

Submissions for the 2013 HBFF Storyteller Competition are sought from black screenwriters who are serious about a career as a screenwriter. Submissions of screenplays, on any topic and genre, will be accepted. Feature length screenplays should average between 70 and 120 pages, shorts between 5 and 50 pages.

The winner will be selected by a select group of industry professionals, including development executives, writers, agents, and producers.

Winners and finalists receive prizes and benefits including cash and exclusive packages from our industry partners, and priceless introductions and meetings with some of Hollywood’s top production companies and talent agencies.

Ten semi-finalists will receive two weekend passes each, to the 2013 Hollywood Black Film Festival.

Three finalists will receive a live, staged reading of a scene from their script (performed by professional actors and directed by a stage/film director) at a Lived Staged Reading at HBFF 2013.

The Grand Prize-winner will receive a table read of the winning script and a writing mentor to help develop the screenplay, and two confirmed meetings with industry professionals.

It is a wonderful thing to have a few competitions dedicated to people of color, something we need. I plan to submit my screenplay before the end of the week, and I am so excited. My fingers are crossed and good luck to everyone who plans on or have already submitted a screenplay.
